Faculty Z: drive

The Faculty has traditionally provided home directories for non-Windows platforms.

The Faculty still provides Linux home directories for staff and students, and can usually provide more storage than is possible with the "M:" Drive.

The storage can also be accessed from Windows and Apple computers.

Default quotas of 8Gb for staff/research users and 5Gb to taught-course users are implemented. Normally, quota increases up to 40Gb on the staff/research system are accepted, but beyond that some justification may be required.

Quota usage can be checked with the quota command:

% quota -s
Disk quotas for user earabc (uid 12345):
Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace
           98M 5120M 5548M 575 0 0

You can request an increase to your quota by sending an email to foe-support@leeds.ac.uk.

When logging in to a Windows system in the Faculty, the storage will be connected as the "Z:" drive.

The Linux home directories can be accessed from Windows systems elsewhere on campus, or from a Windows system connected to the University VPN by manually mapping the drive. This requires knowledge of the server and filesystem. (e.g. from Windows Explorer - Tools -> Map Network Drive -> Folder: \\foe-fs-01.leeds.ac.uk\username).

Information on how to connect to storage from OSX systems can be found here.
