PETAL: 4.2.1 Switching a Defective Tape with a Copy

In case a tape - that has a backup copy - has become unreadable for any reason, the volume to which it belongs will be put offline by the system and an error message will be sent to the PETAL mailbox. If this happens, the archive could be easily fixed by replacing the original tape with the tape copy. Once the copy has been imported back in the library, simply add it to the Integral Volume Set to which it belongs with the command:

vladdtoset [set_name] petal [slot_id]

using the ‘slot_id’ of where the tape has been imported to. The archive will recognize the tape as a copy and switch it in the volume with the original one. Once done, the ‘set_name’ will be once again available online and the defected tape could be exported from the library.

For more detailed procedures that can be performed on the system please refer to the “Disaster Recovery” chapter on the ‘QStar System Administrator’s Guide’.
