PETAL: 3.3.1 Exporting a Tape for External Storage Purposes

Previous: 3.3 Managing the Archive Next: 3.3.2 Exporting a backup tape Home: Petal Documentation

The tape belonging to a set can be exported using the following command for an example volume :

vlexport -s deep1 1

The VL will then move the tape from the given shelf to the first empty slot of the mailslot and will ask the user to input “Enter” only after the tape has been physically removed from the entry/exit magazine. This can be achieved using the touchscreen panel on the Spectra library and the export procedure mentioned in a previous section

Please be aware that if “Enter” is typed before having physically extracted the tape from the machine, it will sit in the mailslot and it will not be possible to take it out until another export command, on any other of the remaining tapes, is issued.

Once typed ‘Enter’ at the prompt, an offline location has to be typed in. The software will already add the set_name, the in_set name, the seq_no and the cartridge label to the location, so just ‘Storage Room’ could be used to indicate the annex location of the IT Environment office.

vlexport -s deep1 1
petal: Please remove medium from mailslot when it is open.
Type Enter when Ready: Enter
deep1:1 seq/span 0 exported from petal:1
Please enter offline location [deep1_1_0_A00001L6]: Storage Room

[root@petal-fs-01 /]# vlmediausage deep1
[+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++] Done.
Set deep1: 2 media
No Seq.No Status Location Capacity Used
1 0 Offline deep1_1_0_A00001L6:Storage Room
2 1 Online petal:2 2328GB 23%
Total: 4656 GB 2695GB

In case another location - i.e. fire safe storage facility - is used, the name and date of such arrangements can be used as a location name.

Whenever an end user tries to read a file that resides on the exported tape, a message will be sent to the email address set in the configuration file ‘/opt/QStar/install/send_notification’ requesting the import of the tape back into the machine using the previously given location to identify the place where it has been stored, the label of the cartridge - to identify which tape is needed - and the ‘set_name’ plus the ‘in_set_number‘ where the tape was once located before the exporting.

The tape could have been already introduced in the Spectra library with the jbimport command explained before and be waiting in the mailslot.

At this point the following command can be used:

vlimport -s deep1 1
deep1:1 is imported from deep1_1_0_A00001L6:Storage Room
Please enter device name: petal
Please enter shelf number: 1
petal refreshing slot 1 ...
[root@petal-fs-01 /]# vlmediausage deep1
[+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++] Done.
Set deep1: 2 media
No Seq.No Status Location Capacity Used
1 0 Online petal:1 2328GB 100%
2 1 Online petal:2 2328GB 23%
Total: 4656 GB 2695GB

Now the tape is back online and the requested file can be accessed by the users.
