The rules for the Small Research Facility are that storage must be purchased in terms of tapes - so in chunks of 2.5TBs (2.27TiBs). We charge 254 per tape. In theory, end users can request either one tape copy of their data (spectra1) or two copies (spectra2). The price is 254 per 2.5TB for one copy, and 508 per 2.5TB for two copies. In practice, all data should be stored in the 2 copy area except in extreme circumstances. So users should always be encouraged to take up the 2-copy price.

Data is also compressed as it's written to tape, and we can take that into account - the Environment storage system lists the compressed and uncompressed volumes of data - so we can flag when compressed volume reaches the tape limit of a particular project.
