Faculty of Environment

General Use Linux Service

This service consists of a cluster of four load balanced machines, all of which have 8 processor cores and 16Gb of RAM.  Our intention is to eventually make the service available to all users in the Faculty.

How to Access the Servers

Accessing the servers from Linux is a simple matter of opening a Terminal window, and entering the command ssh foe-linux.  Once the command is issued you will be seamlessly redirected to one of the four servers.

NB:- The first time you connect you will be asked to accept the ssh certificate before you login with your DS username and password.

Accessing Archive Filesystems

Due to the large range of users accessing this service the archive spaces are not, by default, available.  However, access can be granted on request if required.

How the system works

The system uses LVS (http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/) to load balance the four servers.
