Faculty Mentoring & Probation Process

This summer, a faculty group was established by the Pro-Dean for Research to consider how to ensure that mentoring and probation processes are consistent across the Faculty. This work has included the development of example probation plans for grade 7 research, grade 8 lecturing and associate professor appointments. The Faculty template plans give indicative expectations for those positions. However, the process is that each probation plan must be tailored through discussion with the probationer taking into account the requirements of the role, previous experience, part-time working arrangements and development needs etc.

Guidance documentation for probation advisers has also been written to make the expectations placed on advisers more clear. These local guidance documents do not replace the University Probationary Procedures which can be found here but they are intended to supplement the procedural documents.

We are also introducing a more structured approach to mentoring in the Faculty. Initially this scheme will be for academic and research staff only but it is planned to roll this out to all staff if it is successful. Our mentoring scheme document can be found here.
